COMMITTEE MINUTESTROOP 175 & CAMP 175 INC. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA DECATUR, GEORGIA CHARTERED 1943 |
September 13, 2004 Troop 175 Committee Meeting Minutes
Meeting was held at the Scout Hut.
Attending: Kelly Arnold, Ann Bibb, Gary Cornell, Harry DeMille (treasurer), Charlie Gowing, Jeff Hayden, Bob King, Bruce Lewis, Carl McAllister, Garry Motter, Jim Paulino (secretary), Terri Scroggins, Eric Weber (chairman), Wayne Weeks (vice chair).
Harry opened the meeting with a prayer.
SecretaryÕs Report: The August minutes were approved as submitted.
TreasurerÕs Report: The Troop checking account contains $1,996.13. Some SeaBase accounts are still outstanding. The Troop has had several large expenses in the past year that have reduced the checking account balance. It has not been determined whether the new Camp 175 fee structure will help offset some expenses.
Scoutmaster Report:
Jason was out, but relayed information. Only 2 scouts had signed up for the Allatoona Cleanup weekend on September 18 and 19. With Ivan forecast to rip through the area, and the lack of signed up scouts, this weekend will be rescheduled. (the tentative date is October 9th, please turn in a permission form so that we can plan for this trip.)
Only 1 scout had signed up for the October 9 Š 12 Okeefenokee Swamp Trip. This trip has been cancelled.
High Adventure:
Northern Tier 2005 is being coordinated by Charlie OÕNeal. The intent is to use a private outfitter. Tentative date is end of July/beginning of August.
Philmont 2005 is scheduled for June 15 through June 25, 2005.
Training:
Bruce Lewis and Jim Paulino are taking the (adult) Scout Leader Training with the Hightower District at the Briarcliff UMC.
Woodbadge will be held in October.
Junior Leadership Training was held in August at the Scout Hut and was attended by most of the First Class and above scouts. Walter Miller organized this event and did a great job. Thanks Walter!
Youth Protection Training will be upcoming and will be presented during the weekly scout meetings. This is required every two years if you are active with the boys.
Advancement:
We have 13 Life Scouts. 6 Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle this year. Raymond Almand is soliciting help for his Eagle Project this coming weekend. Deryk Spiker and Jarred Underwood are working on their Eagle service projects.
Camp 175:
Jeff Hayden will survey the effects of Ivan on Camp 175 and also update the list of work projects needed there.
Jeff found the Camp gates open and the mess hall door open. The Camp suffered no damage from the wind and rains.
Old Business:
The adult/scout softball game was fun. The game started late as not enough scouts had showed up in time. The adults won despite an action packed, high scoring second inning by the scouts.
New Business:
Some of the adults still have concerns about he level of play at the scout meetings. It was decided to replace the tackle/touch football game with flag football. Also, it was recommended that each patrol will be responsible for conducting a (non-contact type) play activity each month.
This monthÕs program will focus on orienteering and compass reading. This is especially important for the under First Class Scouts who need this activity for rank advancement.
There was discussion regarding sending delegates to the 2005 National Jamboree. If you or your son are interested, see the Scoutmaster.
Harry made some suggestions regarding speakers for the annual banquet. This will be discussed at the November meeting
Nominating committee was established for 2005 Troop officers, Wayne Weeks in charge. Make recommendations to him.
Upcoming Activities:
Popcorn Sales Š Due October 26th. Sara Pilger has again stepped forward and organized this valuable fundraiser. This is a great way for each of the scouts to earn money for the various Troop activities.
Wreath Sales Š Frank Golley will be organizing this sale.
Camp 175 work day and camping will be held October 9th and 10th. Sign up in advance so that we can plan the projects and activities. Orienteering will also be conducted that weekend.
Next meeting will be held October 4, 2004 at Valerie and Chuck MartinÕs home at 627 Sycamore Street, Decatur, 30030. Telephone 404-370-1542.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jim Paulino
