| June 6, 2007 - Buz McGriff Memorial at Camp 175 |
June 3rd was a nice Sunday afternoon when over 50 interested folks assembled around
the new Flag Pole Memorial for the dedication ceremony at Camp 175, on Lake Allatoona.
Scoutmaster Frank Golley did the honors. Buz's Scouting history covered seven decades,
from the time he received his EAGLE badge in 1944 to being a Scoutmaster in Dublin,
Georgia, an Explorer Advisor, assisting a Troop at the cerebral palsy school and
being a Scoutmaster to a provisional Troop to the 1964 National Jamboree. He served
on the DeKalb District Committee as Organization and Extension Chairman, was a Den
Mother at the Methodist Children's Home and in 1967 joined Troop 175 as a Troop
Committeeman. He then served as Camping Chairman for Camping in the DeKalb District,
receiving the Silver Beaver in 1971. Twice Buz was a crew leader at Philmont Scout
Ranch and then served a full summer as Mess Manager. In 1993 he served on the aquatics
committee at the National Jamboree at Camp A.P. Hill, Va. When Buz died, he was
the Scouting Coordinator for the Decatur First United Methodist Church for Pack
175, Troop 175 and Venture Crew 175. Troop 175 will miss this active Scouter and
our Memorial at Camp 175 is a reminder of his service to young men through the Scouting
Program. The Memorial was designed and built by Jeff Hayden the current President
of Camp 175, Inc. The McGriff family, Jean McGriff, son Steve, daughter Lynn and grand children Griff (19), Ben (17) and Sam (13) all attended.
Camp is being held this week, with over 30 Scouts in attendance and on Friday evening,
Frank Golley will hand over the Scoutmaster reins to Stewart Grant. Frank came on
board as Scoutmaster Feb. 2005 and during his tenure 17 Troop 175 Scouts attained
the EAGLE rank, Frank we thank you for your service to these young men. |

| May 15, 2007 - An Evening With Alvin Townley |
Tuesday, May 15th Scout Meeting was held at the Decatur First United Methodist Church,
Fellowship Hall.
Over one hundred people attended this meeting for an EAGLE Court Honor and to hear
from "Legacy of Honor" author Alvin Townley. Mr Townley, a local Eagle Scout
from Troop 103, at the Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, told the story of his experiences
in writing this book and answered questions from the Scouts afterward. There was
a long line for book signing following the meeting.
Thanks to Wayne Weeks, the meeting is on a disk and can be viewed in its entirety.
If you would like a copy, just let me know.
